Bigger's View of Family

"He hated his family because he knew that they were suffering and that he was powerless to them" (10). This quote occurs in the beginning of the novel while describing the family and where the famiy is living. Bigger doesn't seem to have a close relationship with his family and doesn't want to help them, which is shown when Bigger states that he doesn't want to take the job with the Dalton family. He is also always in a bad mood and conversation usually ends in argument between family members. What do you think Bigger's view of family is and what is his role in the family? Why do you think Bigger treats his family the way he does? Is there something deeper inside that bothers Bigger about his family? Why does Bigger end up taking the job with the Dalton family when he feels he can't help his family?

I think Bigger truely cares about his family, but argues with them due to the way he was brought up. Bigger has dreams of being able to do such more, but is limited because of the racism at this time. I feel Bigger took the job with the Dalton family just so he could see what it was like for those who can do whatever they want.

Bigger feels helpless in the world that he lives in. He is up again the "White Force" and can not get his family to anything better. He states early in the second chapter that his people live the way they do because they haven't done anything good or bad that is significant. He just feels like he can't get anywhere in life.

Bigger appears to have a lot on his shoulders. I think bigger wants to take the role of the adult male in the family. He feels like he gets no respect and the way he feels he can get respect is by taking respect from others (robbing, beating people up, etc). This is the way possibly that bigger tries to asert his power.
